What actually fails on furnaces in this climate

A furnace in Duluth or Superior runs far more hours than the same unit in the Twin Cities — this is a 9,000–10,000 heating-degree-day climate with a −17°F to −21°F design temperature. Components rated for a mild winter simply wear out faster here, and the failures cluster in predictable places.

The single most common call we run is a dirty flame sensor. The sensor proves to the control board that a flame is actually present; when it fouls, the board shuts off gas after a few seconds as a safety response. The furnace lights, runs briefly, then quits — often three or four times in a row before locking out. It is a cheap fix and it is not a sign the furnace is finished.

The second cluster is combustion air and venting. High-efficiency condensing furnaces vent through PVC out a sidewall, and in this climate those sidewall terminations ice over during freezing drizzle and blowing snow. The pressure switch senses the blockage and refuses to fire. We clear it, and then we move the termination or add a snorkel so it stops happening every February.

The third is the condensate path. A 90%+ furnace makes water, and that water has to drain. Run the drain through an unheated crawlspace or a cold rim joist — common in older Superior and West Duluth houses — and it freezes solid, backs up into the collector box, and trips the float switch. Fixing the symptom without re-routing or heat-taping the drain guarantees a repeat call.

How a no-heat call actually goes

A cracked heat exchanger is the one non-negotiable. It is a carbon monoxide risk, it cannot be safely patched, and on most furnaces the exchanger costs more than the furnace is worth. If we find one we will show you the crack — on camera, in place — red-tag the unit, and help you get heat back the same day if we possibly can.
