Should I convert a radiator house to forced air?
In most older Duluth and Superior houses, replacing the boiler and keeping the radiators is both cheaper and better than converting to forced air. Ducting a balloon-framed house with no duct chase means soffits, dropped ceilings and lost closet space, and you trade even radiant warmth for blown air. Conversion makes sense mainly when you want central air conditioning and the ducts would serve both.
What conversion actually involves
A house built before forced air was normal has no duct chase. There is no vertical run from basement to second floor that was left empty for future mechanical use, because nobody was planning for it. So a duct system has to be inserted into a finished house.
In practice that means boxing ducts into closets, dropping ceiling sections to run trunk lines, building soffits along basement and first-floor ceilings, and cutting through framing that in a balloon-framed house is continuous from sill to attic. Then you patch, refinish and repaint everything you opened. Then you remove the radiators and repair the floors and walls where they were.
It is a major renovation, not a mechanical swap, and the cost reflects that. Meanwhile replacing the boiler is a basement job that leaves the rest of the house untouched.
What you would be giving up
Radiant heat from cast-iron radiators is genuinely different from forced air, and most people who have lived with both prefer it. The heat comes from warm surfaces rather than moving air, so there are no drafts, no blowing dust, and no noise. Room temperatures are more even vertically, and the thermal mass of the iron smooths out the swings.
You also keep zoning that is easy to extend, no duct leakage losses, and no filter to change monthly. A well-maintained cast-iron boiler is remarkably long-lived — we service plenty that are decades old with years left in them.
The counter-argument people raise is efficiency, and it is largely obsolete. A modern modulating-condensing boiler reaches 95%+ AFUE, modulates to the actual load, and with outdoor reset lowers water temperature in mild weather. Your oversized old cast-iron radiators are an asset there, because they heat effectively at the lower water temperatures that let a condensing boiler actually condense.
When converting is the right call
There are real cases. The strongest is central air conditioning: if you want ducted cooling throughout, and you are prepared for the duct work regardless, then a single duct system serving both heating and cooling starts to make sense.
Others: the boiler and a substantial amount of the distribution piping have both failed, so you are rebuilding the hydronic system rather than just the boiler. Or a gut renovation is happening anyway and the walls are already open, which removes most of the disruption argument. Or the house is small, single-storey, and has an accessible attic or crawlspace that makes ducting genuinely straightforward.
But if the goal is air conditioning in a house that has radiators and no ducts, price ductless mini-splits before you commit to a conversion. Two or three heads in the rooms you actually use frequently cost far less than ducting the house, add cooling and efficient shoulder-season heat, and leave your radiators in place for the deep winter. Is a boiler more expensive to run than a furnace?
Not inherently. An old, oversized, non-modulating boiler is expensive to run; a modern condensing boiler with outdoor reset is comparable to a high-efficiency furnace and delivers better comfort. The equipment's age and controls matter far more than the heat distribution method.
Can I add air conditioning without ducts?
Yes — ductless mini-splits. One head per zone, a three-inch wall penetration each, no duct work. For a radiator house wanting cooling, this is usually both cheaper and less invasive than installing a duct system.
Will I have to replace my radiators with a new boiler?
Almost never. The radiators, mains and risers stay. We replace the boiler and the near-boiler piping. Large old radiators actually pair well with a condensing boiler because they perform at lower water temperatures.
