What makes residential work here different
This is a 9,000–10,000 heating-degree-day climate with a −17°F to −21°F design temperature, and equipment runs from late September into May. Components that coast through a mild winter wear out here, and sizing or venting decisions that are merely suboptimal elsewhere genuinely fail.
The housing stock compounds it. A large share of Duluth and Superior housing predates 1940 — balloon framing, plaster, original chimneys, and a great deal of hot-water and steam heat. Step outside the city gas footprint and most of the 45-mile area is on propane, fuel oil, or electric with wood backup, which is a different service discipline again.
So we survey rather than assume. Most furnaces we replace turn out to be 30–50% oversized because each replacement matched the previous nameplate, and that is why they short cycle and leave a cold back bedroom. A load calculation is not a formality.
