Short answer

Who services propane furnaces in Duluth and Superior?

Outside Duluth, Superior and a handful of towns with natural gas, most of this service area heats with propane, fuel oil, or electric with wood backup. Propane systems need different orifices, different manifold pressure and different combustion tuning than natural gas — and a furnace converted incorrectly will run inefficiently or unsafely.

Where the gas main ends

Natural gas covers Duluth, Superior, and parts of Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet, Esko, Two Harbors and a few other towns. Step outside those service territories — which is most of the land area inside our 45-mile radius — and you are on propane, fuel oil, or electric with a wood or outdoor boiler assist.

That includes nearly all of the rural Douglas County townships (Maple, Brule, Hawthorne, Bennett, Dairyland, Cloverland), the St. Louis County rural areas (Alborn, Culver, Meadowlands, Cotton, Toivola, Brookston), most of rural Carlton County (Cromwell, Wright, Mahtowa, Kettle River, Sawyer), the Pine County edge, and the Bayfield County shore towns.

Propane is not a lesser fuel, but it is a different one, and companies that work almost entirely inside the city gas footprint are sometimes careless with the differences.

What is genuinely different about LP

Propane has roughly 2.5 times the heat content per cubic foot of natural gas and requires much higher manifold pressure — typically around 10 inches of water column versus about 3.5 for natural gas. It needs smaller burner orifices, and on many furnaces a different gas valve spring or regulator setting.

Convert a furnace by swapping orifices and not resetting manifold pressure, or the reverse, and you get soot, carbon monoxide, a roaring or lifting flame, a cracked heat exchanger over time, or simply a furnace that cannot make its rated output. We verify conversions with a combustion analyser rather than by eye — that is the only way to know it is right.

Propane is also heavier than air, so a leak pools low rather than rising. That changes how leaks are detected and why sniffing at floor level and around the tank and regulator matters. Regulators, first and second stage, are a wear item and a common cause of 'the furnace runs poorly when it is very cold' complaints — a marginal regulator cannot maintain pressure at high demand on a −20°F night, exactly when you need it most.

And on the coldest nights, tank pressure itself becomes a factor: propane vapour pressure falls as the tank gets cold, so a low tank on a bitter night can under-supply a furnace running continuously. If your furnace struggles only during extreme cold and only when the tank is low, that is usually the reason rather than a failing furnace.

Fuel oil, wood backup, and heat pumps out here

Fuel oil still heats a number of older rural properties and some in-town houses. We service oil-fired furnaces and boilers — nozzles, electrodes, pumps, filters, cad cells and combustion tuning. If you are considering leaving oil, this is where a heat pump conversation gets genuinely compelling, because oil and propane are expensive enough that heat pump operating savings are large.

Outdoor wood boilers and wood or pellet stoves are common as a supplement out here. Where they tie into a hydronic system we will work on the integration. The important part is combustion air: a house pulling air for a wood appliance can depressurise enough to backdraft a propane furnace or water heater, and that interaction needs testing rather than assuming.

The rebate picture is worth flagging for propane and oil customers specifically. Because your fuel is expensive per BTU, a cold-climate heat pump's operating-cost advantage is far larger than it is for a Duluth natural-gas customer — often the strongest heat pump economics in our whole service area. Keep the propane furnace as the deep-cold stage and let the heat pump carry the rest of the season.

Can my natural gas furnace be converted to propane?

Many can, with a manufacturer's conversion kit — and many cannot. It requires the correct orifices and a manifold pressure reset to roughly 10 inches of water column, verified with a combustion analyser. If someone offers to convert a furnace without combustion testing it afterwards, find someone else.

Why does my propane furnace only act up when it is really cold?

Usually a regulator that cannot maintain pressure under sustained high demand, or low tank level — propane vapour pressure falls as the tank gets cold, so a nearly empty tank on a −20°F night can under-supply a furnace that is running constantly. Both are fixable and neither means the furnace is failing.

Should I switch from propane to a heat pump?

It is worth pricing, and the case is stronger for you than for a natural-gas customer in town. Propane's cost per BTU makes a cold-climate heat pump's operating savings large, and rebates plus the federal credit apply. Keep the propane furnace for the deep cold and let the heat pump carry the shoulder seasons.
