What to do in the first ten minutes

Call us, then work through this while you wait. Most of it protects the house rather than the furnace.

Check the obvious first, because it is free and it is sometimes the answer: is the thermostat set to heat and calling? Are its batteries good? Is the furnace switch — the one on the wall beside it that looks like a light switch — on? Is the breaker tripped? Is the furnace door fully seated, since most units will not run with the panel off? On a propane or fuel oil system, do you actually have fuel in the tank?

Then protect the plumbing. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so room air reaches the pipes. Let a faucet on the most vulnerable run drip — moving water resists freezing. If you know where your water main shutoff is, confirm you can reach it. Keep the garage door closed if plumbing runs through it.

Keep the heat you have. Close off unused rooms, close blinds and curtains, and do not open exterior doors more than you must. Never heat with a gas range, a charcoal grill, or an unvented combustion heater indoors — that is how carbon monoxide poisonings happen during outages.

If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone out of the house first and call the gas utility from outside. Then call us.

How we triage overnight calls

We prioritise by risk, not by call order. A house at 45°F and falling with an infant, an elderly resident or someone medically vulnerable in it goes ahead of a house at 62°F with a noise complaint. Tell us who is in the building and what the indoor temperature is actually reading — it changes where you land in the queue.

We will give you an honest arrival window. If we are three hours out because we are on another emergency across the bay, you will hear that instead of a comfortable answer, because knowing lets you decide whether to go to a relative's or a hotel and whether to drain the plumbing.

Our trucks carry the parts that cause the large majority of no-heat calls — ignitors, flame sensors, pressure switches, limits, thermocouples, gas valves, control boards, capacitors, circulator pumps and common motors — so most overnight calls end with working heat rather than a return visit.

If the fix genuinely cannot happen tonight — a part nobody in the region stocks, or a condemned heat exchanger — we focus on getting you safe: temporary heat where we can, protecting the plumbing, and a documented plan for the morning.

Frozen pipes and the real cost of waiting

The reason we run this service is not furnace loyalty, it is water damage. A −20°F night with no heat can start freezing plumbing in exterior walls within a few hours, and a burst supply line in an unoccupied house is a five-figure claim.

Highest-risk plumbing in Twin Ports housing: pipes in exterior walls in balloon-framed houses where wall cavities connect straight to the attic, anything in an unheated crawlspace or a rim joist, kitchen lines on a north wall, lines running through an attached garage, and any run in an unheated three-season porch or addition.
