Most furnaces restart on their own within a few minutes of the vents being clear, because the pressure switch closes again and the control board resumes its normal sequence. Plug the exhaust with snow or ice, or plug the intake so the burner cannot get combustion air, and the pressure differential never develops. The board waits, retries, and then locks out.

Nothing is broken at that point. The furnace has done exactly what it is supposed to do rather than fire into a vent that cannot carry the flue gas away. That is worth knowing, because a furnace that quits on the coldest night of the year feels like a failure and is often just a drift. Why you must never chip ice off a PVC vent

PVC vent pipe becomes brittle in deep cold, and a chisel, screwdriver or hammer will crack it rather than free it. A cracked or separated vent lets combustion gas, including carbon monoxide, escape where it should not — either outside the sealed path in the house, or back toward the intake so the burner re-breathes its own exhaust. The permanent fix for a furnace vent that ices over every winter is to change the termination, not to clear it more often. That usually means raising the pipes well above the local snow line, extending them away from the wall, correcting the spacing between intake and exhaust so the burner stops drawing its own moist exhaust, or relocating the pair to a wall that is not facing the prevailing wind or sitting under a roof that dumps snow.

Can I use hot water to melt ice off the furnace vent?

No. Water poured on a vent termination runs down onto the siding and the ground and freezes there, and some of it refreezes inside the pipe where you cannot reach it. It also tells you nothing about why the ice formed. Clear dry snow by hand and let a technician deal with ice.

My furnace has a metal pipe into the chimney, not white PVC. Does this apply?

Not in the same way. An 80% AFUE furnace vents hot, dry flue gas through a metal flue into a chimney, so it does not build rime ice at a sidewall. It has its own blockage risks instead — a deteriorating liner, a bird or debris obstruction, or snow and ice at the chimney top. Those need an inspection rather than homeowner clearing.

How much snow does it take to block a vent?

Less than most people expect. The intake and exhaust only need their openings covered, so a drift that reaches the pipe end is enough even if the pipe itself is still visible. Wind-packed snow against a wall does it easily, which is why terminations that sit low get buried in a single overnight storm here.

Should I check the vents during a storm or wait until it is over?

Check during long storms if you can do it safely, because a furnace locking out at the start of a two-day blizzard leaves the house cooling for a long time. Do it in daylight, watch for ice underfoot and falling snow from the roof, and keep it to clearing snow with your hands or a broom. If conditions are not safe to be outside, they are not safe for this either.
