Why do some rooms never get warm in Duluth and Superior?
Uneven room temperatures are usually a duct problem, not an equipment problem. The common causes are undersized returns, leakage at joints and plenums, duct running through unheated space, and a system never balanced after installation. We measure static pressure and airflow, then fix the cause — often for less than replacing equipment that was never the problem.
The cold back bedroom: what is actually happening
Nearly every house has one room that never gets comfortable, and the usual assumption is that the furnace is too small. It rarely is. In this region the furnace is usually oversized and the duct system is the bottleneck.
The most common single cause is an undersized return. Air the furnace pushes out has to come back; if the return path is too small, the blower cannot move its rated airflow no matter how big the furnace is. Static pressure climbs, total airflow drops, and the rooms furthest down the trunk starve first.
Second is leakage. Duct joints, plenum seams and boot connections leak, and in this housing stock that leakage is often into a basement, crawlspace or attic. Air you paid to heat never reaches the room, and if the leak is on the return side you are pulling cold basement air — or worse, radon and combustion byproducts near an appliance — into the supply stream.
Third is duct in unheated space. A supply run through an unheated crawlspace or a vented attic loses a great deal of its heat before the register. Uninsulated duct in a Twin Ports attic in January is close to pointless.
Fourth is balance. Most systems are never balanced. Dampers sit where the installer left them, the nearest rooms take more than their share, and the far end of the trunk gets what is left.
We measure before we sell anything
Static pressure across the air handler, with a manometer, compared to the equipment's rated maximum. This one number tells us whether the blower is fighting the duct system, and it is the diagnostic most often skipped.
Airflow at the registers and returns, so we know how the total is actually distributed rather than assuming it matches the design. Temperature at the supply plenum and at the problem register, which reveals heat lost in transit. Visual inspection of accessible duct for disconnections, crushed flex, missing insulation and obvious leakage.
Then you get a report that says what is wrong, what it will cost to fix, and what it will change. Sometimes the answer is a $400 sealing and balancing job. Sometimes it is an added return. Occasionally it is a genuine re-design. What we will not do is sell you a bigger furnace to overcome a duct restriction — that makes short cycling worse and does not fix the cold room.
Duct sealing and 'duct cleaning' are not the same thing
Duct sealing is mechanical work: mastic and foil tape on joints, seams, plenums and boot connections so conditioned air reaches the room instead of the basement. It has a measurable effect on comfort and bills, and we verify it by the change in static pressure and register airflow.
Duct cleaning is removing dust and debris. It genuinely helps in specific situations — after a renovation that filled the system with drywall dust, in a house with a rodent problem or visible mould, or where debris is actually restricting flow. It is not an annual necessity for a normal house, and the industry has a long history of selling it as though it were.
We will tell you which one you need. If your ducts are dusty but your airflow is fine and your problem is a cold bedroom, cleaning will not fix it and we will say so.
One thing we do recommend broadly: if any duct runs through an unheated attic, crawlspace or garage, insulate it. In this climate that is among the best returns per dollar in the whole system.

Why is one room always cold?
Usually the duct system, not the furnace. The top causes here are an undersized return, leakage at joints and plenums, duct losing heat through unheated space, and a system that was never balanced. We measure static pressure and register airflow to find which, because the fixes are very different in cost.
Do I need my ducts cleaned?
Probably not on a schedule. Cleaning is worthwhile after renovation dust, with a rodent or mould problem, or when debris is genuinely restricting airflow. If your complaint is uneven temperatures, sealing and balancing is what fixes it — cleaning will not.
Is duct sealing worth the money?
In this climate, usually yes — leaky ducts in an unconditioned basement or attic waste a meaningful share of what you pay to heat. It is also cheap relative to equipment. We verify the result by measuring static pressure and register airflow before and after, so you can see what changed.
Can you fix airflow without replacing my furnace?
Most of the time, yes — and that is the point of measuring first. Adding a return, sealing a plenum, insulating attic runs and balancing dampers frequently solves a complaint that had been quoted as a full system replacement.
