Why is my furnace short cycling?
Short cycling — a furnace that runs for only a few minutes then shuts off repeatedly — is most often caused by an oversized furnace, a restricted filter or duct system, a dirty flame sensor, or a thermostat problem. Oversizing is the most common cause in this region and the only one that cannot be fixed without replacing equipment.
Oversizing: the cause nobody wants to hear
Most furnaces we survey in the Twin Ports are oversized, frequently by 30–50%. It happens because the quick way to size a replacement is to read the old unit's nameplate and match it — and that error gets copied forward every time the furnace is replaced, while the house has meanwhile had windows, insulation or air sealing done.
An oversized furnace blasts the thermostat's setpoint in a few minutes, shuts off, and repeats. You get temperature swings, cold rooms far from the furnace, extra wear on ignition components, and lower efficiency because the unit spends a large share of its runtime in the inefficient start-up phase.
In a −20°F climate the instinct is that bigger is safer. It is exactly backwards: a correctly sized furnace runs longer, lower and steadier, which is both more comfortable and easier on the equipment.
This one cannot be adjusted away. If the furnace is grossly oversized, the fix is a correctly sized replacement based on a Manual J load calculation. Everything below can be fixed without new equipment.
Airflow restriction
A furnace that cannot move enough air overheats, trips its high-limit switch, and shuts down — then cools, resets and repeats. That is short cycling with a specific and fixable cause.
Start with the filter. A loaded filter, or a high-MERV filter jammed into a one-inch slot that was never designed for it, is the most common single cause. Then closed or blocked supply registers and returns, which people close in unused rooms not realising it raises static pressure across the whole system. Then genuine duct problems: undersized returns, crushed flex, or a system that had cooling added to heating-only ductwork.
We measure static pressure with a manometer rather than guessing. That number tells us immediately whether the blower is fighting the duct system.
Flame sensor, thermostat, and venting
A dirty flame sensor produces a very recognisable pattern: the furnace lights, runs 5–10 seconds, shuts off, tries again, and after three or four attempts locks out. That is a safety system working correctly on a fouled sensor, and it is an inexpensive fix.
Thermostat causes: a unit located in direct sun, above a register, or on an exterior wall reads a temperature the rest of the house is not experiencing and cycles the furnace accordingly. Cycle-rate settings configured for the wrong equipment type will also do it.
Venting: on a high-efficiency furnace, an iced or blocked sidewall termination trips the pressure switch. In the Twin Ports, freezing drizzle and blowing snow off the lake do this every winter. Clearing it restores heat; relocating or shielding the termination is what stops it repeating.
Frequently asked questions
Is short cycling damaging my furnace?
Yes, over time. Every start is the hardest moment for the ignitor, the inducer and the heat exchanger, so a furnace that cycles three times as often ages faster. It also costs you efficiency and comfort in the meantime.
Can I fix short cycling myself?
Try the free things first: replace the filter with the correct thickness and a moderate MERV rating, open every supply and return register, and check the thermostat is not in sun or above a register. If it still cycles, it needs diagnosis.
How do I know if my furnace is oversized?
A load calculation is the only real answer, but the symptoms are suggestive: very short run times in mild weather, big temperature swings, and cold rooms at the far end of the duct system while the thermostat reads satisfied.
