Why we work the way we do

There is a version of this trade that runs on volume: get in, quote a replacement, get out, and let the next company deal with whatever was actually wrong. It works because most customers cannot check the work. You cannot see a heat exchanger, you cannot measure static pressure, and you have no way to know whether the furnace someone just sold you is the right size for your house.

We decided to run the opposite way, which means measuring things and then handing you the numbers. Combustion analysis on every gas appliance we touch. Static pressure across the air handler. Temperature rise checked against the nameplate. Refrigerant charge verified by subcooling and superheat rather than by feel. Those readings go in writing at handover, because a number you can compare next year is the only real evidence that anything was done properly.

It also means telling you when not to spend money. A recurring theme in our estimates is "this does not need replacing" — a cold radiator that needs the loop purged rather than a new boiler, a cold bedroom that needs a return duct rather than a bigger furnace, a steam system with uneven heat that needs venting rather than a new plant. We lose some jobs that way and we would rather have the customer.

What we are genuinely specialists in

Hydronics and steam. A large share of the older Duluth and Superior housing heats with hot water or steam, and it is a different trade from forced air — different diagnostics, different parts, different failure modes. Plenty of companies in this market are honestly not comfortable with it. A substantial part of our winter is boiler work, and we will service a fifty-year-old cast-iron boiler that has decades left rather than talk you into ducting a house that has no chase for ducts.

Propane and rural systems. Outside the city gas footprint, most of our 45-mile area runs on propane, fuel oil, or electric with a wood or outdoor-boiler assist. Propane needs different orifices, roughly three times the manifold pressure of natural gas, and combustion verification after any conversion. We also test for the interaction nobody checks — a wood appliance drawing combustion air can depressurise a tight house enough to backdraft a propane furnace or water heater.

Cold-climate heat pumps. Not as a fashion, but because the arithmetic genuinely works for the large share of our customers who burn propane or fuel oil. We set the dual-fuel switchover from your actual utility rates and show you the calculation, rather than leaving a factory default in place and hoping.

Commercial refrigeration and make-up air. The two commercial systems where failure costs real money fastest — a drifting walk-in is inventory and a health-code problem within hours, and a restaurant without working make-up air is a code exposure and an unworkable kitchen.

Two states, deliberately

Superior gets treated as secondary by a lot of Duluth contractors, and it should not be. We hold credentials in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, carry insurance valid in both, and cross the bridges every working day. Superior addresses get the same rates, the same $89 diagnostic and the same scheduling priority as Duluth ones, with no bridge surcharge.

The practical benefit is on the rebate side. This service area spans Comfort Systems in Duluth, Minnesota Energy Resources outside it, Minnesota Power for electric, and Focus on Energy across the whole Wisconsin side. Most homeowners never claim what they are owed because the programs are confusing and contractors who work one territory do not know the others. We work all of them.

What we will not do

We do not publish review counts or star ratings we cannot substantiate, and you will not find invented testimonials on this site. When we have a body of verifiable reviews we will point you at the platform hosting them rather than retyping them here.

We do not run the scarcity script — no "this price is only good today", no manufactured urgency on a decision that costs thousands of dollars. If a furnace genuinely needs replacing before the weekend because the heat exchanger is cracked, we will say exactly that and show you the crack.

We do not quote a replacement before diagnosing the fault. If someone arrives at your house and recommends a new system before measuring anything, that is not an inspection.
