Cold air out of the registers means the blower and the burners have come apart from each other. Either the blower is running on its own, or the burner fired and a safety shut it down while the fan kept going. Both feel identical at the vent and have completely different causes, so the first job is telling them apart. If the house is dropping and you cannot get the burners to stay lit, that is a furnace repair call, not a wait-and-see.

Is the thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO?

A thermostat fan switch left on ON is the single most common reason a furnace seems to blow cold air, and it is not a fault at all. On ON, the blower runs continuously whether or not the burners are firing, so between heat calls you feel room-temperature or basement-temperature air at every register. On AUTO, the blower only runs during and just after a burn cycle. Move the switch to AUTO and see whether the complaint disappears. Continuous fan has real uses — it evens out the temperature between a cold back bedroom and a warm living room — but on a January morning it reads as a furnace problem.

Can a dirty filter make a furnace blow cold air?

Yes — a plugged filter is one of the most common causes of intermittent cold air. The furnace needs a certain volume of air across the heat exchanger to carry heat away. When a filter loads up, that airflow falls, the heat exchanger runs hotter than designed, and the high limit switch opens and shuts off the gas as a safety. The blower keeps running to cool the exchanger, so you get a stretch of warm air followed by several minutes of cool air, over and over. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is part of the problem. Filters are not the only airflow restriction. Closed or blocked registers, a collapsed flex duct in a crawlspace, or a return grille behind furniture do the same thing. In older houses around Cromwell with undersized returns added on over the decades, the filter is often just the last straw on a duct system that was tight to begin with.

The furnace lights, runs a few seconds, then quits

A furnace that lights, runs five to ten seconds and shuts off — often retrying three or four times before going quiet — is showing the classic dirty flame sensor pattern. The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to the control board that gas is actually burning. It works on a very small electrical current, so a film of oxide on the rod is enough to break the signal. The board sees no flame, closes the gas valve within seconds, and tries again. After a set number of failed tries it locks out and the blower may keep running, which is where the cold air comes from.

The related failure is the ignitor. A hot surface ignitor glows orange to light the burners; as it ages it cracks or drifts out of resistance and stops reaching ignition temperature. The tell is different: with a bad ignitor the burners never light at all, so you hear the inducer and the blower but no whoosh. Both parts are inexpensive and both are inside the burner compartment, which is not a homeowner area — the compartment holds live line voltage, the gas valve and the manifold.

A blocked intake or exhaust stops the burner before it lights

A high-efficiency condensing furnace will not fire at all if its PVC intake or exhaust is blocked, and in this climate those sidewall terminations ice over. Freezing drizzle, blowing snow and the plume of moisture the furnace itself produces build a collar of ice around the pipe ends. The inducer motor starts, cannot pull the airflow it needs, the pressure switch never closes, and the control board refuses to open the gas valve. You get a blower cycle and no heat. Clearing snow and ice from the outside of the vent terminations is on the short list of things a homeowner can safely do, as long as you can reach them from the ground and you never push anything into the pipe.

The same fault shows up on 80% AFUE furnaces venting into a chimney, usually from a bird nest, a fallen liner, or a blocked combustion air opening. Out in the townships near Moose Lake, drifting is the usual culprit; on the Duluth hillside it is more often ice off a roof. Either way the pressure switch is doing its job — it is refusing to let the furnace burn gas without a proven path for the exhaust.

Condensate backup and the float switch

A condensing furnace makes water every time it runs, and if that water cannot drain, a float switch shuts the furnace down. The drain line runs to a floor drain or a condensate pump; route it through an unheated crawlspace or along a cold rim joist and it freezes, backs up into the collector box, and lifts the float. Some installations wire that float to kill the thermostat circuit entirely, so the symptom is a dead system rather than cold air. Others just stop the heat call while the blower finishes its cycle. A clogged drain and a frozen drain look the same from the outside and need different fixes — one is a cleaning, the other is a re-route or heat tape.

What a technician checks that you cannot

  1. Reads the control board's flash code, then verifies it rather than trusting it — a pressure-switch code can be ice, a cracked hose, a tired inducer, or the switch itself.
  2. Measures flame signal in microamps on the flame sensor, which separates a sensor that needs cleaning from a board that is not reading it.
  3. Checks ignitor resistance and the burner flame pattern.
  4. Measures temperature rise across the heat exchanger and static pressure in the duct, which is how airflow problems get proven instead of guessed at.
  5. Confirms the high limit and rollout switches are opening for a real reason, never bypassing one to keep the furnace running.
  6. Inspects the heat exchanger, because a furnace that cycles on limit for years is a furnace whose exchanger has been stressed.

When to stop troubleshooting and call

Stop and call once you have checked the fan switch, the filter and the outside vent terminations and the furnace still will not hold a flame. Those three are the whole of the safe homeowner list for this symptom. Everything past them is inside a compartment with line voltage and a live gas manifold. Call sooner than that if the furnace has locked out more than once, if you hear a boom when it lights, or if a carbon monoxide alarm has sounded — in that last case get everyone outside to fresh air first and call 911.

In deep cold the decision gets simpler, because an unheated house on a night near the −17°F to −21°F design temperature starts risking frozen plumbing within hours. If the cause is the fan switch on ON, yes — nothing is wrong. If the furnace is cycling on a safety, running it is hard on the equipment and the underlying fault will not fix itself. Intermittent cold air from high-limit trips means the heat exchanger is being overheated repeatedly, which shortens its life.

Why is the air warm at first and then cool?

That pattern points at airflow. The furnace heats normally, the high limit opens because not enough air is crossing the heat exchanger, gas shuts off, and the blower keeps running to cool things down. Then the limit resets and it starts over. Check the filter and make sure return grilles and registers are open.

Does a heat pump blowing cool air mean the same thing?

No. A heat pump in defrost mode deliberately reverses for a few minutes to melt frost off the outdoor coil, and the supply air can feel cool during that time. That is normal operation, not a failure. A gas furnace has no equivalent mode, so cool supply air from a furnace always has another explanation.

Is a flashing light on the furnace worth writing down?

Yes. The control board flashes a diagnostic code, and the legend is usually printed on the inside of the furnace door. Counting the flashes and reading the legend tells the technician which circuit the board is unhappy with before anyone opens a panel. It does not replace diagnosis, but it saves time on the call.
