Does the lake change when you need heat?

Lake Superior holds summer warmth into the fall, so the Duluth and Superior lakeshore usually needs heat a week or two later than the inland townships do. Drive half an hour and the calendar changes. Sturgeon Lake and Zim sit away from the lake's influence and can take a hard frost while the hillside is still opening windows in the afternoon.

The reverse is true on the Wisconsin shore. Herbster and the rest of the south shore get the same lake moderation into November, then lose it when the wind comes off open water. None of this changes the advice — it only changes how many mild days you have left to test in. Inland, start earlier.

What to do if the furnace does not light at all
